Provenance and Background Info

A stunning set of designer dining chairs. I’d say they were made in 1980’s and likely to be Italian-made. They could possibly be Danish or Swedish but I’m more inclined to say Italian. I don’t think they’re an Australian production- the timber looks like Beech to me. It is not a timber used in Australian furniture. The timber is amazing- fresh and “clean”. It has such a light tone which gives them a sleek, minimalist look. This timber has no knots- no “busyness”- it’s some of the nicest timber I’ve seen and the light colour pares back the look for a refined, elegant style.
The construction quality is just as impressive. There are no visible joint areas- the internal joinery must be expert. Despite the age, there is no separation or movement in any joint area- no repairs, no structural issue at all. These are some of the best made chairs I’ve ever seen. Notice the reinforced corners underneath. This is a sign of true quality- this extra work strengthens the structure to ensure the chairs will last for generations … and they already have. I’d say these are about 40 years old.
The sculptural elegance is also something to behold. They’re beautiful chairs and not easy to make. The curves are not only awe-inspiring but make for some of the most comfortable dining chairs you’ll ever sit in. The backs are at the perfect angle- the kip back creates the best possible comfort (as opposed to back legs that are straight) plus they’re curved at the top of as well. Your back melds perfectly into these chairs- there’s padded comfort too. It’s rare to have padding in the backs when there’s also exposed timber.
Make no mistake, these are special chairs. I’d say something like this new would have to fetch about $1,200 each. This is one of the easiest descriptions I’ve written for some time. They get a resounding tick in every box.
After modern offerings have fallen apart and ended up as landfill, this vintage set of chairs will be passed on to yet another generation- a testament to the enduring quality on offer. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
