Provenance and Background Info
This design is called “Trio”, designed by Pierluigi Cerri in the early-1980’s for Poltrona Frau.
Poltrona Frau is a high-end Italian manufacturer that has been stocked by the likes of SPACE Furniture. It belongs to the same stable as Cassina- Poltrona Frau own Cassina and Cappellini- these two companies fall under the Poltrona Frau umbrella. Poltrona Frau ranks up there with B & B Italia and Poliform as far as quality and design appeal is concerned. This is vintage Poltrona Frau from the early-1980’s. Not much design came out at this time- it had to be something special to make it to production. This design has a Memphis vibe but is so timeless you could put it on the floor of SPACE Furniture today and it’d still hold its own. To my knowledge, this design has never been held by stockists in Australia. I’d say these chairs were chosen by an interior designer who placed a special order and waited almost a year to have them shipped across to Australia in the early-1980’s. I doubt you’ll find anything like them again.
Remarkably, 95% of the Poltrona Frau collection is crafted by hand, establishing them as world leaders in leather upholstery. This brand is celebrated for its exquisite furniture, featuring the patented “Pelle Frau” leather—a result of extensive research and 21 stages of tanning, ensuring both softness and durability for contract interiors. The exceptional quality of “Pelle Frau” leather has even earned recognition in the luxury car industry, with Ferrari and Maserati utilizing it for their car interiors.
Pierluigi Cerri, began his illustrious career in 1974 after graduating from Milan Polytechnic. He was the editor of several design magazines, a celebrated graphic designer, a designer of fittings for many important museum venues the world over, a much-respected architect, a creator of visual identities for corporations such as Ferrari Auto and Guzzini, a designer of cruise ships and yachts, a designer of expo events, creator of corporate identities for luxury brands such as Prada, an industrial designer and of course a furniture designer who worked with high-end Italian brands such as B & B Italia and Poltrona Frau. He has been bestowed numerous awards in all fields that he’s worked in.
These are the best chairs I’ve stocked for many years. They’re constructed of solid steel so they’re heavy and incredibly sturdy- I reckon they’d support virtually anyone. The structure is amazing. They have a lean, dynamic look- they’re leaner than any lounge chairs I’ve seen before- this has allowed Pierluigi Cerri to create a graceful flow unlike you won’t see again. What I like most about them is the unique style but it’s also very timeless. The colours here are perfect- the grey allows the curves to be the focus and the terracotta gives it a pop of fun, but is so well-balanced. Rarely do I come across design that achieves so much and has such widespread appeal. I doubt I could find many people who wouldn’t like them. Designer furniture can be very polarizing- these have such universal interest. They could be used successfully in virtually any interior. I can even see them in a traditional interior with brickwork and raked ceilings bringing in an element that bridges the traditional with the modernist. In a warehouse apartment, they’d work famously. They’ll never go out of style either, ensuring a solid investment. Something like this is in perennial demand.
Despite the striking looks, the comfort is also incredible. Perfect angles, nice padding, even the back height is perfect.
Vintage furniture that stands apart in terms of both durability and design is one of the best financial furniture investments you can make but above all, buying items that have been built to last is the best way you can reduce landfill and help the future of our environment.
