Description
NOTE- this listing includes some display photos of another Artica Dining Suite (in the exact same design) that we sold a few years ago to give you a clearer idea of this design. The last 3 photos of the suite in Butterscotch leather (the LIGHTER coloured leather) taken in our vendor’s dining room are of the actual suite on offer. The darker coloured leather chairs in this listing sold a couple of years ago.
You can opt to buy 6, 8 or 10 of these dining chairs in butterscotch leather- the vendor has 10 chairs but would be happy to be left with 4 chairs for his new home. The listed price is PER CHAIR. The matching extension dining table (in SOLID timber) will be additional. Price of the table will depend on how many chairs you would like to buy and the ease of the sale. (Table will be around $1,400.) We’d prefer to sell a set of dining chairs (6, 8 or 10) WITH the matching table. I have heaps more photos and a few videos as well of this suite in my phone which I can forward to you if you have further interest. This particular suite was produced in the 1980’s so is now around 40 years old. LOVE these tones but this design!
LOCATION- being sold by a private seller under consignment from ADELAIDE.
Background Info and Provenance
(Description predominantly written in 2021 and updated in 2026)
A set of VINTAGE “LAPPI” dining chairs made by ARTICA FURNITURE. Artica were a craftsman furniture-manufacturer based in Adelaide, South Australia (that went out of business very recently). I love the shape of these chairs! With their curved backrests and slender, elegant silhouettes, they pay homage to classic Kai Kristiansen designs. They combine premium comfort with an uncompromising standard of quality that’s very hard to find today. Meticulously constructed with incredible attention to detail, they are built to stand the test of time and be passed down as family heirlooms.
This is the third Artica dining suite I’ve ever had to sell- the design really impresses- they’re some of the best dining chairs ever made in Australia. The comfort is INCREDIBLE- subtle slant back in the seat, perfect curve in the back, amazing plushness, the armrest section is spot-on- your arms nestle perfectly into this chair, plus the height of the seat-back is also perfect for comfort. All these elements combined create an incredibly supportive chair. Designed for long, leisurely dinners, these chairs invite you to sink in and unwind completely.
The only reason most people have not heard of Artica is because there’s not much of it around. When furniture is made this way (using the techniques of yesteryear), it can’t be mass-produced. It was impossible for Artica to make these suites en-masse. The hours of craftsmanship involved precluded this. These chairs retailed for around $4,500 back in the 1980s! That’s just for the chairs- the matching table sold for an additional $4,000. TOTAL- $8,500. With inflation this would be about $23,100 today! As a comparison, in the early-1990’s (just a few years later) the average Australian family could have bought a new Honda Accord for a similar price (around $10,500 for a new car back around the same time! We have attached the print advert in this listing to prove it!)
Dating from the 1980’s, this particular suite has had one owner and has been very well looked-after.
There’s no way ANY furniture company in the world could produce this suite for anywhere close to our asking price. (And definitely not in Australia!) This leather is the real deal- proper VINTAGE Australian FULL-GRAIN VINTAGE leather (by Howe Leather). It’s buttery soft and THICK as well. It has had minimal processing and is protected by a quality pigment finish. This leather is already about 40 years old and still looks amazing. If you give this leather a little attention every now and then (a quick clean and an application of conditioner every few months), this upholstery will serve you and your family for a lifetime or more.
Crafted in SOLID JARRAH timber they just DON’T make furniture like this anymore, and in fact solid timber furniture like this was rarely produced back then due to the cost involved. Buying Australian-made vintage furniture is a great way to go. You’re investing in a stunning suite of the highest-possible quality- to top it off, the value of vintage Artica Furniture can only go up in the future after it has become properly discovered. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint … plus by buying from iNVISeDGE you’re supporting various AUSTRALIAN SMALL businesses (including our freight carriers).
