Description
Being sold under consignment from a private seller located in Forest Hill, MELBOURNE (Melbourne metro area) but can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable additional fee. It’d cost about $300 to get this full suite to SYDNEY. I personally worked with this suite so am fully versed on what I’m selling.
Vintage Featherston Scape chairs fetch MORE THAN TRIPLE this! Our price here is for ALL 4 chairs. The matching table is additional. This set has been priced to sell- it offers a cost-effective alternative to Featherston’s Scape dining chairs. (And I personally like Mitzi chairs just as much as Scape chairs too.) It would be $1,150 for both the table and 4 chairs. We’ve had a few people wanting the chairs only and we’ve said previously they’d need to buy the matching table as well. We would now consider selling just the chairs.
Provenance and Background Info
This is the best Mitzi dining suite I’ve seen after 24 years in this business. The upholstery is perfect in my eyes. The original silk-sheen vinyl from the early-1960’s is amazing. Silk-sheen vinyl has a shine to it. This adds opulence and also accentuates the graceful curves, providing an extra dimension to the shape. And the colour here is perfect! It’s a similar tone to natural timber- they’re close to the colour of the famous Series 7 dining chair in oak by Fritz Hansen. This upholstery is earthy in looks, neutral but still has a subtle pop of colour. It’d work in most homes. Mitzi chairs tend to be beige or white which is a bit ho-hum. I’ve seen others in chocolate or black- too bold for such a sleek design in my opinion. Others were done in red- red is garish and the colour itself tends to take the much attention. This upholstery gives them some pop but still allows the stylish, sinewy frames to be the hero. And the dimensions of this suite are perfect too. Ideal as a kitchen setting and just as perfect as the dining suite in a small apartment. It’s compact, minimalist, stylish but has real character too.
The Mitzi design is way under-valued and offers a very solid investment opportunity. This is a beautiful chair with it’s flowing lines and a lean stylish profile. The Mitzi has all the fun of the 1950’s-era but with elegant sophistication… And these chairs are so damn COMFORTABLE too! They’re some of the most comfortable dining chairs you’ll ever find. The seats are curved to support you perfectly and the angles are spot on- perfect for relaxing in over long periods.
Grant Feathertson’s Mitzi design is often overlooked but has everything going for it. They’re a very smart investment if you have a family as they hold up extremely well to very solid use and are one of those very rare furniture investments you can confidently use with children and it will hold it’s value over time, if not increase in value over time. Scape dining chairs are now fetching about $700 PER chair (and even more). I’ve recently found restored Mitzi chairs priced at over $700 each on another website too. I personally like the Mitzi design just as much as the Scape- this design is underrated and has a long way to go before it starts fetching it’s real value. The construction quality is top-notch- the steel frame is indestructible- I’ve never seen a structural issue with Mitzi furniture. The curved timber seat and back is of the highest quality and not easy to make. These chairs also stack. (But please put a thick blanket between each seat if you’re going to stack them to prevent indentation marks or better still if you have to reduce storage, store them in twos, one inverted on the other.) This furniture couldn’t even be made in China for the price we have on this authentic vintage suite. After 60 years the cushioning on Mitzi chairs usually disintegrates and makes the seats lumpy- NOT WITH THESE! The cushioning was replaced on this set fairly recently by a professional. The job was meticulously done- these chairs are ready to be used and loved for another generation.
The other thing Mitzi chairs have going for them is the versatility of the design. Dealers are beginning to renovate these vintage chairs with startling results. Imagine the frames powder-coated in white and the upholstered sections re-done in silk-sheen vinyl in pale green. They’d certainly turn heads- for all the right reasons! The design is so stylish and timeless it lends itself to many looks. I had a recent phone call from someone asking my advice as to whether they should pay $1,500 PER CHAIR for professionally renovated Mitzi chairs. I thought $1,500 per chair was obscene but this person was seriously considering buying them. It goes to show the timelessness and perfection of this Featherston design.
After modern dining chairs have ended up as landfill, these 65 year-old Grant Featherston-designed gems will be passed onto yet another generation to enjoy. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
