Provenance and Background Info

(Written in 2011. This set of 6 chairs sold in iNVISeDGE in 2011 for $1350. These days in 2018 I’d price the exact same set at $1650- they’re great chairs and I’ve never seen anything like them since!)

A set of SIX 1950’s dining chairs that I believe were done by George Korody. These are certainly 1940’s or 1950’s chairs. The timber used in the construction is Coachwood a rainforest timber that was used in Australia until the early 1960’s. After this time Coachwood was never used again. I believe they’re Korody’s design because of the “scissor leg” style which he created in the late 1940’s. Korody’s work is extremely rare which adds weight to my hunch- these chairs were certainly not done by any of the bigger furniture companies at the time.

Hungarian-born architect, George Korody was highly influential in furniture design circles in Australia. He established Artes Studios which later evolved to become SPACE Furniture which is still in operation today. Korody’s designs are not often seen and are included in the Powerhouse museum because of his contribution to Australian furniture design. This is the first time I’ve seen this design in the 10 years I’ve been in this business and while the construction techniques are not as sophisticated as many of today these chairs have been done by somebody who knew what they were doing. As far as durability is concerned they are possibly the strongest timber dining chair I’ve seen. Every joint has been incredibly well supported and they’re all as solid as a rock. After more than 50 years they’re structurally brilliant and with normal use will last several lifetimes.

Even if these are not Korody’s design they are still worth more than virtually any other mid-century dining chair around simply because of the rarity and quality of the workmanship. They tick every box for what I’m looking for in a dining chair for iNVISeDGE (they’re extremely comfortable above everything else). If you ever need a change the current dark stain could be stripped off to reveal the blonde colour of the Coachwood underneath. I have included one photo of some other chairs sold in iNVISeDGE in 2007 for $320 each (the red chairs in photo 11). These chairs are also Coachwood and have been included to show what the timber of these scissor chairs would be like underneath. (The red chairs are NOT included in this sale.) When other chairs have long ended up as landfill this set will be passed onto yet another owner to do exactly what they were designed to do. There’s no better way to invest in your home and in our environment.
