Provenance and Background Info

(Written in 2025)

A stunning set of 8 saddle-leather chairs made in Italy by Arper (c. early-1980’s). (Price is PER chair.) These Arper chairs are highly-esteemed and sought-after because of their practicality, COMFORT and exceptional quality. Most of these chairs have “Arper Italy” labels underneath. I can not find any sets of Arper chairs in this exact design for sale WORLDWIDE at the moment. Similar vintage chairs in this style sell overseas for OVER AU$1,100 PER CHAIR but I could find no sets of 8. EIGHT vintage chairs like this are worth more per chair than 6. Miss this set of 8 and you could be waiting years (decades?) for a similar set (particularly here in Australia). There’s not much vintage ITALIAN furniture here. Similar chair designs were stocked by Artes Studios in Australia back in the 1980’s which later evolved to become SPACE Furniture- so this is basically a SPACE Furniture equivalent of the early 1980’s. I actually prefer this design over Cassina Cab chairs from the same era. Cassina Cab chairs are now selling new for over AU $3,000 PER chair. There’s also a Fasem Italy dining chair on 1stdibs for AU $4,558 FOR ONE CHAIR (!) – my price for this set of 8 is LESS than the price of that one! Plus this set is in the best condition I’ve ever seen this type of design in! A very strong investment.

The saddle-leather here is THICK and top-quality. The stitching is meticulous. These chairs are about 40 – 45 years old and just look at them! Ready for another lifetime of use and enjoyment. The metal is also the best quality- there’s no corrosion to the frames that is noticed. These have a nice minimalist look- very lean, stylish and modernist. It’s hard to believe this design is about 50 years old- that’s timelessness for you! Many designer pieces are brash and hit you in the face- these are more restrained which means they’ll be easy to put in any space (even a small apartment). It’s hard to get dining chairs that are noticed but won’t completely dominate or crowd your dining area.

Durability. Timeless, stylish design. Enduring quality. Solid INVESTMENT appeal. This leaves us with practicality and comfort. Pigmented saddle-leather is a great choice for dining chairs- any spills are easy to wipe off and the inherent durability of saddle-leather needs little upkeep- a clean with a good leather cleaner particularly in Summer and a quick wipe over with a quality leather conditioner every now and then will keep these looking like this for another generation. These are also EXCEPTIONALLY COMFORTABLE to sit in. The angles are perfect and the seat cradles your back beautifully. This Arper chair design is one of the best of this era- you’d be very happy to spend hours in these chairs- the comfort is extremely well considered.

After most modern “designer” chairs have ended up as landfill, this exceptional set of 45-year-old Arper dining chairs will be passed onto another owner and very likely future generations. There’s no better way to help protect our environment and reduce your carbon footprint but to top it off, it’s also the smartest furniture investment I can think of from a financial standpoint. If they’re looked after, this vintage Arper set should at least hold their value in the future. (You couldn’t even make these chairs in China for even double this price.) Buying quality vintage furniture is arguably the best way to buy furniture (I doubt there could be any argument on that- after 24 years in this business I believe it’s fact).

As the photos show, EVERY chair is in excellent vintage condition. This set of Arper dining chairs are about 45 years old so may have minor signs of use but there's NO damage and NO signs of use that warrant a mention. These chairs are in the best condition I've seen this design in. ALL 8 chairs are amazing structurally- the frames are rock-solid and strong with no evidence of any structural damage and there’s also NO noticeable corrosion to the metal at all. All connections are perfect. The stitching is heavy-duty and in brilliant condition. Due to meticulous workmanship and sensible use, these chairs look amazing 45 years on and will last the long-haul with normal use. The leather is THICK, HARD-WEARING and beautiful to sit in. The photos of the pairs show ALL 8 chairs close-up. The saddle-leather obviously has minor signs of use over 45 years (particularly small indentations from studs in jeans but this is nit-picking in my eyes. It's not noticeable at all- you have to be scrutinising the chairs closely- plus these minor signs of use are actually desirable in my eyes- they give you permission to not pander to your chairs. Use them sensibly- like previous custodian/s have- and they will continue to look like this for another 40 or 50 years. There is no DAMAGE to these chairs AT ALL. Just (sensible) signs of (normal) use. NO ABUSE! They have been extremely well looked after. The front armrest edges have minor wear but nothing that's noticeable. One armrest edge (shown clearly in the photos) has significantly more wear than the others but even with this one, you have to get on the floor and look up at it to notice it (and who does that?) One chair has a minor indentation to the leather on the back- it's about 5cm long. Again- not noticed. It is there but you have to be looking out for it. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The frames are in original condition. I didn't have time to polish up the chrome. It is ready to have one of those (non-abrasive) green plastic scouring pads used to polish it up. Doing this will get the chrome back to basically new in minimal time. After this, the chrome will look great for another 40 or so years. Although it looks great as is (as the photos show). I'm sick of cleaning other people's furniture particularly when it makes little difference to how the item looks. You won't find better quality chairs. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________   Measurements. 58.5cm across. Depth is about 48cm. The total height of each chair is 77.5cm- the seat height is 47.5cm. Armrest height- 68cm (near front of armrest).
