Background Info and Provenance

A stunning RED and YELLOW glass decanter most likely made in the 1960’s. This item has a height of approx 23.5cm (with the stopper on) and there is the vintage foil BLENKO Handcraft label to the base. I’m not sure who designed this piece as it’s the only one in this shape that I’ve ever seen. Blenko is a US company based in West Virginia and has been in business since 1893. Blenko has produced a huge assortment of stunning art glass often pushing boundaries and starting new trends. The Blenko website includes a history of the company which makes fascinating reading and depicts a business built by people for people. Blenko is still in business to this day using time-honoured traditions and people to hand-produce their products. In a world where machines are taking over, Blenko is a company that reminds us that heart and soul can still be found. All Blenko items have been hand-crafted by artisans- their passion obvious in every Blenko piece.

This is a great item to anchor a group display of glass. If you’re going for a bold slant to your group this piece will help bring it all together. I love the group shot that has the blue decanter in the foreground- I think this one ties that group together. Even with a totally different type of display this piece could give it an earthy rustic look to the group. Genie bottles in red and orange are basically impossible to find (I’ve only had a handful in 10 years of collecting and selling) but to me if you’re going for a retro/mid-century look this colour is essential.

This type of thing is virtually never found in Australia- I got this from America. With its FOIL LABEL to the base the re-sale value and investment appeal of the piece is assured. This is a piece that’s certain to be passed on from one generation to the next. It’s already about 50 years old and the design captivates just as much today as it did back then. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment.
