Background Information and Provenance

A LARGE blue iridescent globe (orb) vase created by Australian artists, Chuck and Lesley Simpson. This vase is clearly signed to the base. It was created in two parts and has a speckled iridescent finish influenced by Chuck’s earlier days working with Colin Heaney. It’s a bit like looking up at the night sky and goes famously with a group display. It complements rather than takes attention away from other art glass, particularly when placed with other iridescent pieces. Chuck was born in 1944 and taught secondary school before taking up glass-blowing. In 1985, he began working with Colin Heaney in his Byron Bay Hot Glass Studio. He then moved to Inglewood in New Zealand where he cemented his name as one of the best glass artists working at that time. I’ve seen some extraordinary pieces he created in New Zealand. In 1990 he returned to Australia and started making art glass in Eumundi (Sunshine Coast, Queensland) with his wife Lesley. I’d say this piece was done in the early 1990’s. Sadly Chuck Simpson passed away in April of 2001 at the age of 56.

Art-glass pumped out of factories by the thousands/millions is cheap but it rarely ignites any inspiration or passion- most ends up as landfill after a few years because when the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless. If you believe artists jobs are best done by people and not machines consider investing in hand-made art. There are very few better ways to invest in your home, reduce your carbon footprint and create stories to be passed from this generation to the next. The work of Chuck and Lesley Simpson has been telling stories for nearly 30 years now and etched a permanent place in the history of Australian art.
