BASICALLY IRREPLACEABLE!!!

Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2015 but updated in 2026)

A PAIR of T9 lounge chairs designed by Fred Lowen for Tessa Furniture in the mid-1970’s. The T9 model is the rarest of all the T-series and in my opinion, the best. I rate the T9 significantly above the much-celebrated T4 design. The T9 is more comfortable than the T4. You’re very well supported in the T9’s- the angles are great for comfort plus there’s plushness as well. This is a great sitting chair- perfect for conversations and watching TV etc. In my eyes, the T9 surpasses the looks of the T4 too. The styling of this pair is more refined and minimalist but this does not equal boring. Look at those curves! Sinewy and flowing- the T9 exudes grace and style. They remind me of a gymnast’s ribbon in motion. This design has a masculine presence- they exhibit boldness, stature, confidence but they’re just as much feminine- the hero of this intriguing design is the overwhelming refined elegance. So inspiring! These chairs won’t dominate your space because of the minimalist style but they’ll still be noticed.

The comfort box is ticked- the looks box ticked- which leaves durability and investment. Another two ticks. Because they were made in AUSTRALIA in the 1970’s by Tessa Furniture the durability of the construction is assured. Research Tessa on-line for a few minutes and you’ll see that Tessa developed its reputation because of unsurpassed construction quality. A pair of T4s retailed for about $8,000 the pair NEW before Tessa went under in 2019- Tessa could only ask such a sum because their products are unquestionable in quality…. Just look at this pair after 50 years of use- incredible! Tessa furniture is no longer produced. The T9 model also had a very short production run back in the 1970’s- T9 high-backs are probably the rarest Tessa design ever made- after 25 years in this business, I didn’t even know this model existed until this pair landed in front of me.

And yet there’s even more positives. The height of the top cushions can be adjusted to suit you and where you want your head to rest (via saddle-leather straps and durable metal buckles0. This full-grain leather is also buttery soft and beautiful to sink into.

Buying vintage furniture that has already stood the test of time is, in my opinion, the best way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint. Tessa has told stories for about 55 years and will continue to tell stories well after you and I have left.

approx 1801 and 2605

This PAIR is vintage (mid-1970’s production). Both chairs are in incredible condition for their age. The timber frames are brilliant. They’re solid and resilient with NO breakage, NO cracks around any joint, NO movement in any joint, NO repairs- they’re extremely sturdy and strong. Cosmetically the timber frames present very well- they’re about 50 years old so may have minor signs of age and use but nothing that’s noticed. The cushions and leather upholstery are both in incredible condition after this many years- I rarely see furniture in such amazing condition. There are NO signs of pets or cigarette smokers- NO smells- the cushions are clean and soft. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The internal cushioning is doing a great job. It’s in great condition and provides softness and support (it’s certainly not hard). These are VERY comfy chairs to sit in. The timber slats in the backs are the highest quality you can buy (much better than the netting backs on the T4). There will never be any upkeep needed with the backs. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We don't have the measurements for the high-back version yet- please ask. LOW-BACK Tessa T9 single-seater chairs measure 71cm across by about 73cm back with a height of 69cm. The seat height is 45cm at the front and the depth of seat is 50cm. (For freight- 0.7cbm.)
