Background Info and Provenance

(Written in late 2018 / early 2019)

A HAND-MADE Peter Goss vase that’s engraved to the base, Peter Goss PSG395 (I think it may have an ’82 on the base as well). Goss is known as a leading Australian glass artist and the first glass artist to set up a studio in Queensland. He originally trained at the Jam Factory in Adelaide when Sam Herman was creative director (from 1974 to 1977). He then went on to set up the Paraison Glass Studio (PSG) in 1981 at Tewantin (near Noosa, Qld).

This is a major work by Goss. I’ve never seen another one by him that’s bigger or more complex. It contains a lot of elements. I’d say it depicts the ocean- the sand and rocks, jellyfish and shoals of fish shimmering by. Though to me everything is contained in this piece- there’s the ocean, trees, clouds, rain and sunshine all intermingled to remind us how they are interrelated and without one the others would not exist (and we would not exist either). It’s obvious this is a hand-worked piece that has come from the hands and heart of a person (and not a machine). I’ve come across nothing like it before. It looks like a true piece of art to me- it’s creative and tells a narrative and wasn’t just made to look “pretty”.

“The works of Peter Goss are prized when they come onto the market,” (taken from an online message board on art glass). Because there are very few major works by Goss around this piece will draw the attention of serious collectors and would be accepted by any high-end auction house. Google, Peter Goss glass and if you dig a little, you’ll see some amazing pieces of work by this talented artist. This is certainly one to be passed from one generation to the next. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
