FOR ONE MEDIUM Boda Zoo-Series LION (14cm long) ONLY

Background Info and Provenance

NOTE- THIS LISTING IS FOR THE MEDIUM/LARGER (14cm long) KOSTA BODA LION ONLY. THE OTHERS HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED AS A GROUP TO GIVE A RELATIVE FEEL FOR SIZE AND SHAPE OF THIS PIECE.

IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN ANY OTHERS LET US KNOW AND WE’LL DO UP A LISTING FOR YOU.

A MEDIUM Boda lion measuring 14cm in length. (There is also a huge jumbo size measuring 26cm long but they are virtually extinct.) This size is usually regarded as the larger size. This figure is part of the Zoo series sold before Kosta Boda merged- it was made by Boda in the 1970’s. I’ve got several animals in my own collection that have a “Boda- Handmade in Sweden” foil label- the “Boda” verifies the piece is pre-1976. (The lion in this listing DOES NOT have a label). Due to the popularity of these figures other series were released by Boda including the Circus series and Farm series. There is surprisingly little information on these figures- I can’t find anything really except a couple of discussion boards where people say how much they like them. Some dealers say they were designed by Erik Hoglund and others say Bertil Vallien. Most tend to say Vallien who is the most successful of all Kosta Boda’s designers. Kosta Boda is arguably the most successful glassworks in the world. The zoo series is immensely popular and set to increase in value in the future as they become harder to get. (I for one will be tightly hanging onto my collection- I love them. This is an extra one I found in my travels.) These creatures are all HAND-MADE from crystal and about 40 years old.

This lion does NOT have a label however I’ve compared him to a labeled lion I have and he’s identical (the clarity of the crystal, the proportions, everything the same). I have a couple of animals that I worked out later are not Boda (but they look very similar). Be careful when buying these. It’s hard to tell the difference until they’re put beside each other. This one is authentic- guaranteed Boda c1970’s.

I can’t see the zoo series losing any value in the future. There’s no chance it will end up as landfill because he’s gone out of style- you’ll be one link in a chain that might go on for centuries. If there comes a time to part with him, this vintage piece should hold the same investment appeal in the future as he does now (but most likely more). There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

Other Zoo Series we currently have available for sale. Please note this list is subject to change as we often get enquiries for the zoo creatures-

Small Hippo- approx. 10cm long – $62 (small hippos are quite hard to get)

Large Elephant- 15cm long – $84 (elephants have mid-range rarity- they’re quite hard to get in Australia though- I got this one from overseas- the weight means less of them have come to Australia because of high international postage costs)

Rhino- see the separate iNVISeDGE listing

Smaller Giraffe- 18cm (it’s still much taller than all the larger animals in this series)- $99 (the giraffes are hard to get in Australia but not ridiculously rare like the tiger and 2-humped camel)

Small lion- 10.5cm long – $58 (the small lion is much harder to get compared to the larger lion)

Other Boda items I have that are in related series (same style as these)-

Boda Unicorn- 15cm long (Fantasy Series I think it’s called)- $78

Boda Afghan Hound- large- 16cm long (there’s a Dog Series called the Kennel Series)- $79

Other Zoo Series in my own collection that are NOT FOR SALE at this point in time-

Small elephant- approx 10cm long

Large Hippo- approx 13cm long (there’s a ginormous hippo as well that’s 23cm in length- it’s too big to be displayed with the others- it looks odd with all the smaller ones)

Curly-horned Ibex / Antelope with original foil label (most don’t have the labels on them)- 14cm high

2 humped camel (which is so so soooooooo rare!)

Large Giraffe- 24cm in height
