Background Info and Provenance

An incredible Mother of Pearl shell lamp from the 1950’s. I have 2 of these lamps at home and love them! I got my first one about 5 years ago and I love it more today than I did when I first got it.

These stunning shells have been converted into a lamp. (The shells are both real). This piece is both earthy and natural but also clamorous at the same time. Mother of Pearl is highly-prized and is said to attract fortune and happiness. It can also be especially useful for handling and calming emotional situations. Having it nearby when working through an emotional situation is said to promote cooperation. Abalone (Mother of Pearl) is reported by intuitive sources to stimulate psychic development and intuition. It can strengthen the immune system, muscle tissues and the heart. It is helpful for arthritis and joint disorders. It can help with allergies, rashes and skin complaints.

This lamp is not only stunning to look at but also good to have around for your health. The Mother of Pearl shell alone is worth good money but the skill and time needed to fashion these elements into a lamp also enhances the investment appeal of this piece. This lamp has been professionally assembled and is very well made.

There are not many shell lamps around- I’ve seen very few made with Mother of Pearl. Most tend to have smaller Mother of Pearl shells and they’re “padded out” with coral and the likes which I think detracts from the pearlescent shimmer. It’s my understanding that most (all?) were done in the 1950’s (or late 1940’s).

After many modern pieces have lost favour and ended up as landfill this vintage piece only becomes more prized as it gets passed onto each new generation. (There’s also no more a perennial designer than Mother Nature herself so this one will never go out of style.) There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

This lamp is in excellent condition for its age. The cord and plug both work well and are in excellent condition. This lamp works well (as shown in the photos. Because it’s used, I need to state for legal reasons that it’s a condition of purchase you have it checked by a qualified electrician prior to use. The lamp is over 60 years old but presents very well. The shells may show minor signs of use but nothing is noticeable at all or adversely effects the display of this incredible piece. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements. PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
