This set of 6 perspex swivel chairs SOLD for $1,295 in 2015.

Provenance and Background Info

A set of 6 PERSPEX dining chairs designed in the 1970’s. These chairs have 2 maker’s tags verifying their age and provenance- some also have the date on them- various chairs are dated 1981 and others 1984. Sets of 6 in this design are incredibly rare. The last time I came across chairs like this was a set of 5 back in 2005 and they sold immediately with a matching circular table. (They commonly did sets of 5 dining chairs back in that era.) These are a much better investment because there are 6. (People no longer want 5 dining chairs.) You can choose any table that will suit your space. I think an oval Parker table (sleek teak timber) would look sensational with these chairs.

This chair design is a favourite of mine. They have that space-age look but it’s not over the top. There’s a sleek refined quality that shines through also. And whilst the fabric is distinctly retro the earthy colours tone down the retro look for a more sophisticated style. There are various design elements to these chairs but they come together so well to create a look that’s unique, interesting but also stylish. The copper coloured backs are stunning! They’re earthy, distinctly 70’s and with the right timber table they’d look contemporary with that elusive unique edge. (A smoky glass top table would also look great with these.)

I’ve always had a fascination with Perspex furniture and recently came across some modern Perspex chairs in a trendy café. I researched them online. They were being retailed for AUD $600 each and through further research I found they weren’t even genuine Perspex. Most Perspex furniture you’ll find is vintage because Perspex is expensive and rarely used anymore. Perspex is as durable as it gets. Did you notice one of the tags under these chairs? The new break-proof material- very 1970’s but it shows how tough these chairs are. This set has obviously lived up to the claim! Much of the plastic furniture you’ll see around today is a different type of plastic. It can scratch and chip easily. If chairs look like this after 40+ years it’s a certainty you’ll get as many years as you want out of them (with sensible use).

To top it off this set of vintage Perspex swivel chairs will always have re-sale value. If they’re sought- about 50 years after the design was first released they’ll never lose their appeal. Good design and intelligent workmanship is timeless. There are very few better ways to invest in your home financially when you invest in vintage furniture (good vintage design usually increases in value with time). There is also no better way to reduce your carbon footprint…And I almost forgot- these are also really really comfortable chairs- particularly for dining chairs. (You seem to just melt into these!) You can see the comfort just from the photos. Look at the angles, the rounded back, the nice height in the back, the padded seat and the swivel feature- these all make for a really comfortable dining chair… And if you decide you ever need to sell these chairs in the future, approach me, I’d love to see the design again.

For 30+ year old chairs, these are in exceptional condition overall. In a structural sense they’re strong, solid and sturdy. Cosmetically they also look brilliant. They have been used for 30+ years so there are some superficial scratches and small scuffs but for chairs of this age the condition is amazing. Perspex is super-high in quality. Newer chairs like this are made out of a completely different material. The upholstery is original so it has a few very minor signs of use but it presents extremely well. There is a small cut to a side edge- it’s tiny- and no fabric is missing. If you were to glue this down with fabric-glue you wouldn’t see it at all. (It’s not noticeable as it is.) All chairs swivel properly. I cleaned the chrome up AFTER I took the photos. This means that the chrome looks better than in the photos. I think one chair near the front of several photos has been cleaned and the one beside it hasn’t. All chairs cleaned up just as easily as the one shown in some photos. The chairs look great in the photos- they look great in person and they’re incredibly durable chairs- they’ve been used for over 30 years but have very little to show for it. These have certainly been built to stand the test of time.      Aarghh! I forgot to take the measurements of these when I was in Sydney and they’re now in storage. I have used similar chairs I sold back in 2011 to provide very careful estimates for you. These chairs measure ABOUT 82cm in height, ABOUT 51cm across and ABOUT 51cm back. If you really need an exact measurement let me know as I have an agent in Sydney who can do this for me. The measurements given though will be close to spot-on.
