Background Info and Provenance

A stunning “Shell Vase” HAND-CREATED by Tina Cooper in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands in 2004. This piece is fully (and clearly) signed to the base- “Tina Cooper 2004- Australia- Shell Vase”. It’s substantial measuring about 32cm in height. The piece required Tina to orchestrate several highly-skilled artisans working around the furnace. Every part of the process is critical. Hand-made from liquid currents of molten glass, this piece was created by drawing hot glass from a 1200-degree Celsius furnace at exactly the right moment and then fused, layered and placed around the vessel. When working by hand and with so many variables at play every one of Tina’s pieces is unique. I love some of her pieces and others I don’t connect with so much- this is the attraction of HAND-MADE art. I connected with this one the second I saw it and had to have it. There’s a magical quality to it- it has a flow I suspect happens when Tina is at one with her creation, when it’s just her and the piece that’s emerging. The colours are truly spectacular and its sinewy, flowing shape draws you in immediately. I love the layering of the piece- there’s swirls of clear glass amongst the colours that allow light to shimmer through and reflect off some areas. Some sections are transparent and flowing- others are opaque and pointillist. I also love how the pointillist sections get lost in the swirls and how the swirls get lost in the motion near the top. I think Tina “nailed” this one. Her best works attract serious collectors- this piece is bound to continue to increase in value in coming years as Tina goes onto greater heights.

This piece has the heart and soul Tina’s work is renowned for. It was hand-created in 2004. When I recently went to see Tina at her gallery she described the early 2000’s as a highly-trying time. She was still trying to get her business off the ground and it was a challenge to make ends meet. There’s passion and soul in this one but Tina’s determination also shines through. I love this mix of human determination and the “flow” that happens when someone gets completely “lost” in what they’re doing. Tina transports us to this other place. A machine-made piece will never do this.

I first noticed Tina’s early work- her Martini pieces- created in partnership with Mark Galton in the 1990’s. These Shell-Vases were done sometime later in the early 2000’s.

Art-glass pumped out of Chinese factories in the thousands is cheap but rarely ignites any inspiration or passion- most ends up as landfill after a few years because after the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless (a lot of “art-glass” coming out of China these days is not even glass- it’s chemicals melted together- our discards … recycled!) If you believe artists jobs should be done by people and not machines consider investing in hand-made art. There are very few better ways to invest in your home, reduce your carbon footprint and create stories to be passed from this generation to the next. Tina Cooper’s work has been telling stories for about 30 years now and has etched a permanent place in the history of Australian art glass. This piece comes with a current valuation certificate to solidify your investment (Tina has valued the piece at $1200) as shown in the photos.
