A Post & Rail lounge suite made in Sydney in the mid-1970’s. Post & Rail Furniture re-branded in the 1990’s to become Pacific Green Furniture which has gone on to become one of the most coveted furniture brands in the world. A comparable Pacific Green suite in this configuration would fetch about AU $18,000 these days. But this is a RARE vintage design that I doubt you’ll see again. After 25 years in the business, I’ve never seen this a suite like this before. I have to admit that most Post & Rail designs are a miss for me. The construction quality is always exceptional (the quality always gets a HUGE tick) but many of their designs are weird or just plain daggy. This suite is an obvious exception. It’s very “tidy” and timeless but also unique. It has a brutalist vibe but is minimalist at the same time- these juxtapositions create an intriguing look. The seat sections (whilst padded and extremely comfortable) are sleek and refined. The seat curves plus the use of metal heighten the designer look. There’s a lot of negative space here and noticeable elevation off the floor (which is unusual for lounge furniture). It’s bold but has a “lightness” and simplicity that eludes most Post & Rail Furniture

The comfort and QUALITY really shines. This stuff is very solidly built- look at it after 50 years of use! The seating comfort is amazing- perfect angles and curves where they need to be plus good padding. This is low-line furniture (it won’t dominate your space) but this is not at the expense of comfort. Your back is very well supported- these seats hold you perfectly and support your back nicely. To top it off the leather here is EXCEPTIONAL- it feels even thicker than what Tessa used in the 1970’s. One thing is for sure, this is VINTAGE leather made back in the 1970’s when leather was leather. They didn’t cut corners then, processing was kept minimal, only the very best made it through- inferior leather hides were discarded in the 1970’s and 80’s.

This furniture would suit a myriad of homes. Nestled in front of a fireplace, I doubt you could find anything with more appeal. It’s rustic and inviting but with an interesting designer edge. In a warehouse apartment, it’d be incredible! It’s hard to get earthiness coupled with a chic designer vibe.

I have no doubt this suite will increase in value in the future … and significantly. It’s similar to Norman Archibald’s work but I like it even more. As it’s more refined. Archibald’s work has skyrocketed (virtually doubled) in value over the last few years- I believe this design will do the same. This design has the same appeal as Robert Dunlop’s designs. Dunlop’s single-seater lounge chairs are now fetching AU $2,000 EACH- this design has the same amount of appeal as Dunlop’s making it a no-brainer investment. Once this suite sells- it’s gone. They’re not readily available. With the first Norman Archibald lounge suite I stocked, it took iNVISeDGE about 4 months to sell it. As soon as I marked the listing as sold- 3 people immediately expressed interest in buying it. But it was gone. The interest in a future Archibald suite only increased until I got another 2 years later. People wait, then are bitterly disappointed when someone else commits. This type of vintage design doesn’t come up often. Tessa Furniture remained in business for 50 years, so there are Tessa suites around. But even then, sought-after Tessa configurations are less likely to be relinquished by people so sought-after configurations hit the market MUCH less regularly. I doubt if this design by Post & Rail was produced for even a few years- I’ve never seen it before- the chances of this design (in this configuration) coming up again in the near future is close to zero. This comment is not based on conjecture- it is based on 25 years in this business where I have hundreds of items submitted to sell in iNVISeDGE every year (95% of what comes my way is not stocked though).

All 4 pieces of this Post & Rail lounge suite are in EXCELLENT vintage condition. All of the leather is exceptional quality and all the leather is in excellent condition, with virtually no wear or signs of use. It all looks great and has been very well looked-after. One chair has a small cut in the leather in the head-rest. This is from some sort of negligent act- NOT from wear. A single event caused it. It could definitely be repaired by a leather professional as it's in an area where no real stress is ever applied to the area. I coloured the cushioning underneath, so it's not really noticed. This area has been photographed clearly. It could be used as is with no problems- or use it for now and endeavour to get it fixed down the track. These are very solidly built chairs. The triple thickness timber frames provide a lot of strength and stability- these are solid HEAVY chairs. There are 4 connection points, strategically placed for stability. Two points are bolts on each side, one at the top back and the other at the front bottom- plus there's two other connections on each side. The bolts are supposed to be covered with timber buttons- these are purely cosmetic- most of these have gone astray over the last 50 years. The other two on each side are supposed be covered by a brass cap. Most of those have also gone astray. There are 4 remaining all up- take one down the hardware to get something that will work or use Google to find something. These help prevent a small amount of lateral movement but the previous owner said they've been missing for decades. (Lateral movement is very minimal and only happens if you purposely try to push the chair from side to side- it NEVER happens otherwise- normal sitting does nothing. The chairs are solid and very sturdy. The brass caps don't do much because the 4 steel connections on each side extend snugly through about 6cm of timber. There's no structural issues at all despite the fact that these caps are missing. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dimensions.
