LOCATION- Being sold under consignment by a private seller in BRIGHTON, Melbourne but can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable additional fee (ABOUT $180 to get it to Sydney). I travelled to Melbourne to personally work with this chair (and other consignment items) and take these photos so I’d know exactly what was on offer.
Background Info and Provenance
I was presented with this chair to sell in iNVISeDGE a while ago now and love it even more after working with it and getting the photos.
This is a genuine Jimmy Possum chair- Australian made, boutique, approximately 20 years old. Jimmy Possum built an early reputation on exceptional construction quality. Their furniture was known for solid hardwood construction throughout- no chipboard, no compromises and no shortcuts in workmanship. Their pieces were built by hand with a level of precision and attention to detail that characterised the Australian makers that were operating during this period. This particular chair reflects that standard- it is heavy, remains completely solid and is structurally perfect after more than two decades of use- incredible!
That same commitment to quality and meticulous production, however, made it difficult for the company to compete with lower-cost overseas imports designed for short-term use and fast disposal. As a result, original Jimmy Possum pieces became increasingly scarce. The company eventually had to close, making examples in this condition both uncommon now and to become rarer still in future years.
The fabric is this deep, rich purple crocodile pattern that manages to feel both luxurious and completely usable. The outer sides have a beautiful floral design that stops it from being too serious. It’s the kind of chair that gets noticed the moment someone walks into the room, but it doesn’t feel try-hard or over the top. Arty without being ridiculous. Opulent without shouting.
What I really love about it, is how solid it is. It’s heavy. Proper heavy. You sit in it and it just feels planted- no creaks, no wobbles, nothing cheap about the construction. The upholstery is tough as nails too. This isn’t a delicate showpiece. It’s made to be lived with and loved.
I’ve always thought the best pieces are the ones that still look special over 20 years later, and this one certainly meets that criteria. It should easily do another 20 years and then another.
Investment appeal also gets a huge tick here. This piece cost about $3,500 to be custom built … and that was over 20 years ago! This offering is great value.
If you’re after something that has character, design flair, feels luxurious but still has real construction substance- ie. built the proper way with care- this authentic Jimmy Possum chair is the one for you.
After the majority of modern furniture has ended up as landfill, this chair and footstool by leading Australian furniture manufacturer, Jimmy Possum, will be passed onto a new generation. Good honest workmanship and exceptional design is timeless. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
