Background Info and Provenance

(The 3.5-seater sofa SOLD for $1840 in 2016. The other 2 pieces were priced separately but have also sold!)

A 3.5-seater “Astor” sofa retailed by Coco Republic (an Australian company) about 16 years ago for $5500 … to be completely accurate the suite was stocked by Town & Country. Town & Country re-branded to become Coco Republic about 10 years ago. At the price it sold for back then there are very few of these around. I love the mix of earthiness and chic designer. The oak timber and cane gives it a natural, earthy look but the stunning curves create a design that’s certainly noticed but not harsh and clinical like most designer furniture these days.

Because this suite was stocked by Coco Republic the quality is assured- it’s extremely solid furniture made BY HAND and crafted to last generations. I sold another suite like this recently (it sold in 2 days) and that suite had labels underneath that read, made by Southern Furniture Company of North Carolina, USA. (This suite does not have any labels- most in this design don’t.) Coco Republic scouts the world for the best furniture design and craftsmanship. Southern Furniture Company began over 130 years ago and is regarded an international industry leader. The owner of the company served as President of the American Furniture Manufacturer’s Association in the mid-1990’s which was when this design was created. This design has been one of Coco Republic’s most heralded.

The SOLID OAK frame construction is stunning but also solid, heavy and durable. This suite is about 16 years old (and has had solid use). The fabric is also high-quality and considering its use has lasted well. The seat cushions and back cushions are separate to the frame AND FULLY REVERSIBLE. When the covers get a bit grubby simply flip them over or unzip them and machine wash (return them to the cushions whilst damp to prevent shrinkage). This means re-upholstery of the cushions is dead-easy making the whole suite a smart choice for families with young children or in any heavy-use situation. Durability, handcrafted construction, stunning looks but comfort hasn’t been compromised. The back cushions are plush and soft so this suite is nice to sink into. The seat cushions are firmer providing support and the right degree of plushness. Under the cushion is a metal seat spring-system. This is not only a sign of quality but provides the highest comfort in a seat (and is a lot more durable than normal strapping).

This full suite retailed for about $10 000 about 16 years ago and is set to become a future antique. Like Parker, Rosando Bros and Zoureff shine above the pack today so too will the Coco Republic selections in 50 years from now.

Trends come and go but when furniture built 16 years ago still stands out, it has come to supersede trends. And, when a lounge suite looks like this after 16 years of use you’re guaranteed of the quality you’ll be getting. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

NOTE- This listing price is for the 3.5 seater only.

This 3.5 seater sofa is about 16 years old and in excellent condition for its age. The construction qualities are brilliant- solid and sturdy. There is NO movement in any joint, NO repairs, NO structural defects, NO cracks, NO splits- nothing of the sort. Cosmetically the frame presents extremely well. The sofa shows very minor signs of use- NO abuse, NO misuse. Under the curved cane sections is solid timber which means the cane is fully supported and can’t be pushed in or damaged. (Unlike virtually all the furniture that’s out there that looks similar to this.) The upholstery presents very well overall but is 16 years old and has had solid use (and is white). As the photos show there are no noticeable signs of use but when you start inspecting the suite closely there are expected tell-tale signs of use- very slight yellowing/discolouration (on only one side) of some cushions (not all)- minor marks that are not noticed. Over the full suite there are a couple of cushion edges that have worn through (not noticed when on display but certainly there). There is one zip that has prised apart at the seam (not noticed). The upholstery on the back of the lounge and front edge is the same fabric but a different colour (a wheat type colour). This ties in with the frame and is very practical as the darker fabric does not show dirt or minor marks. As a result, all these areas present well overall. I removed all the white cushion covers, soaked them for 24 hours in Napisan, washed, then re-washed them all in normal laundry detergent. This had a remarkable effect. I’d say doing this again would make the covers look even better. The previous owners never washed the covers in the full 16 years they had the suite (and they had 3 kids) and the upholstery looked decent enough. They didn’t even turn the cushions over. Remember this upholstery has had 16 years of solid use. It almost looks new in the photos (and does in person as well) but I strongly doubt you’ll get another 16 years of use out these covers. (I’d say maybe 5-8 years depending on how the suite is used). The frame will last forever with normal use. When the upholstery starts to become too tired re-upholstery is a breeze. Take the old covers and new fabric to anyone with a sewing machine. It’s not a hard job nor costly. Because all the covers have just been washed the suite is fresh, clean and ready to be used. The inner cushioning is all in extremely good condition and will continue to last the long haul. The springs under the seats are all in brilliant condition. The dust covers underneath have come away from the edges in some spots but you don’t notice this until you get on the floor! Measurements. Across- 217cm. Depth- 87cm. Total Height- 76cm. Seat Height- 42cm. Depth of Seat- 54.5cm without the square cushions on.
