OFFERS OVER $700 EACH for the chairs with no arms. OFFERS OVER $800 EACH for the pieces with one arm. And OFFERS OVER $950 for the curved piece. Or OFFERS OVER $3,950 for all of it.

We’ve decided to list this suite in an OFFERS OVER situation because it’s the only vintage suite we’ve had like this in 5 YEARS. The OFFERS OVER situation will give people holding out for one of these suites enough time to discuss with others, then jump in with an offer knowing the suite will definitely still be available.

The OFFERS OVER situation will also allow us to assess interest for individual parts and whether it will be worth breaking this suite up. (We’d much rather sell all pieces together though!) The intention of the OFFERS OVER situation is not to milk it and hold out to get the absolute highest price we think we can get but to give interested parties following iNVISeDGE a chance to talk to others and call us to put in an offer before it’s sold to someone else.

Being sold under consignment by a private seller in ELTHAM, Melbourne but can be easily transported Australia-wide for a reasonable fee. My estimate is about $440 to get all the suite to Sydney (to help you gauge freight prices).

Provenance & Background Information

Definitely one of Featherston’s most heralded designs. In recent years, this has become one of his most collectable. I’m pretty sure it’s the Featherston Numero V11 model. There is a Bridgestone label under at least one piece which indicates it’s a later production. I also spotted a stamp reading, 31-10-84. I’d say that’d be the date, October 1984. It is my understanding that this design was so popular it continued into the 1980’s. This adds to the investment appeal here- this suite is now over 40 years old. These are always HOT property- the demand for Featherston Numero suites has been scorching for at least a decade. Prices have skyrocketed (and are set to keep going up). I have to come clean and will admit I never understood the hype around this design until I got to experience it again in the flesh about 5 years ago. This is a seriously cool design and sooooo comfortable and so unique! I also love the comfort and the fun, relaxed vibe of this iconic Featherston design.

I’ve been told that this may not be a Featherston design but a later release by Bridgestone- it’s clearly better than the Numero suites so in my opinion it’s worth more than the Featherston Numero VII. That’s my humble opinion based on 25 years in this business. This is very slightly different to a Numero VII but made much better- therefore, it has to be worth more than the Featherston design. I believe that Bridgestone had to pay Featherston to continue making the design into the 1980’s, therefore they decided to IMPROVE the design and release a derivative where they didn’t have to pay Featherston royality fees anymore.

The fact these are lightweight chairs and so easy to move around, caps off a really clever design. You can set these up in many configurations- the possibilities are endless- go for a unique, fun look for your space because they all separate so easily. When friends come over (or you’re having a meeting with staff) everyone can grab their own chair and put it wherever they want in the room within seconds. And then move it back to how it suits the space before they leave, with no difficulty … no stress. The comfort is also amazing and is why these suites have become so sought-after. Soft, enveloping, really nice to settle into- but make no mistake, there’s really good seating support too. Perfect for long work-meetings, people with bad backs or watching Netflix for hours on.

The thing that ended up really selling this design to me in is the construction quality. This is a later design- the steel substructure has been improved on earlier Featherston Numero models. This steel substructure is complex, creates better seating support compared to the earlier models in this design plus increased durability. The foam is extremely durable as well- the Featherston Archives website state it’s “resilient moulded foam”. The foam certainly is VERY resilient. The majority of these Bridgestone suites are now nearing 50 years old, and I’ve never seen any problem with this foam ever … it just keeps on going!

I really like the colour too. It’s neutral and earthy in tone. It’s not as jarring as other Featherston suites I’ve seen online. The overall tone is light too which means that as a full suite it’s less imposing. And because of the earthy slant it’s easier to place in any home. I like the fabric type too. This fabric from 80’s is as tough as nails and repels marks and stains. And the proof is right here in the condition of this suite after over 40 years. It’s the 80’s version of boucle with nice texture and weight- such a timeless upholstery choice. So much so that I’ve seen these suites re-done in boucle- white though. I think this is a smarter colour- it won’t show dirt and hasn’t. Look at it after 40 years of use.

The final thing that needs to be mentioned is the investment appeal on offer. Featherston is probably Australia’s most celebrated designer ever and this is one of his most popular designs (over a 50-year-career). Contour chairs are now fetching $6,000+ each for the standard R160 model and over $10,000 for his really rare designs (that have never been replicated or re-issued). The investment appeal here is a no-brainer- there’s a long way for these to go before they reach anywhere close to the value of his contour designs. And if the R160s are getting $6,000 for a single chair, there’s no reason why a full suite like this can’t get even stronger prices in the future. They’ve rapidly appreciated in value since 2010- the upward trend hasn’t faltered in over 15 years.

This design ticks EVERY box and resoundingly so- PLUS it’s a very astute investment. Quality, vintage design appreciates in value (if you buy right)- it’s a win/win for everybody… for you, our environment and our local community (ALL iNVISeDGE staff and support businesses are 100% LOCAL). There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and the future of our environment (whenever you invest in vintage furniture, you’re reducing future landfill too).

ALL of these pieces are in excellent vintage condition. The structure of the chairs is all perfect and the resilient moulded foam is also in excellent condition- nothing that warrants a mention- no smells etc. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The covers are a simple drawstring set-up where it's the drawstring that pulls the cover on tightly. The covers are tied under the sub-structure to further keep them in place. Picture drawstring shorts that prevent you from losing your pants in the surf and having to walk up the beach naked! This is same idea- the upholstery job can’t be difficult. If re-upholstery was ever needed it is an easy unpicking job to get the pattern and then a quick sew-up. It’s the drawstring that’s doing the hard work here (not the upholsterer). Such a clever design- they don't do them like this anymore! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The current upholstery is about 40 years old but has been extremely well looked after. Honestly, there's nothing that I can point out with this suite. Don't get me wrong- it's not new, but it presents incredibly well for a 40+ year-old suite. NO holes. NO rips. NO stains. NO noticeable wear. NO abuse. Maybe some very minor signs of use if you really scrutinize, but nothing really. I travelled to personally inspect this suite and take these photos. You'll get NO nasty surprises here! If the condition impresses me it should impress anybody. (I'm very fussy but there are some weirdoes out there.) It looks great! There are a HEAP of photos to show it warts and all. Lighting wasn't the best but I worked hard to show the suite as accurately as possible.
