Background Info and Provenance

(THIS DESCRIPTION WAS WRITTEN IN 2024 and updated in 2026)

A FLERCLUB (FLER Club) sofa designed by Fred Lowen for FLER (released in 1962). These are also sometimes called the Flerline. I love this design. They have a subtle designer edge but still work well in any interior. There’s a refined simplicity to the overall look but just enough “pop” to ensure these pieces are not sterile and boring. The minimalist Danish aesthetic comes up trumps, the designer slant adds interest. This is the rarer 4-seater variety of the Flerclub. Lowen did a 3-seater which, if memory serves me correctly, is between 170 and 180cm. This one is 210cm long- the perfect length and VERY HARD to get in any vintage sofa.

The price we have on this one makes it a solid investment- this design is often chosen for re-upholstery- I’ve seen re-upholstered ones fetch thousands. So the investment-appeal box also gets a resounding tick. This leaves us with comfort and durability. The comfort is perfect for a sofa- long enough for anyone to sprawl out completely, also long enough for 2 people to lie out on from each end- plus the seating comfort is PERFECT for up to 4 people. This lounge holds you in perfect seating position. Notice how the seat section slants back? This is harder and more expensive to achieve but ensures the lounge is holding you and you’re not holding yourself up. Plus, there’s nice plushness too. This leaves us with durability- also a big tick. These sofas are now nearing 60 years old and I’ve never seen anything wrong with any of the ones I’ve ever come across. The construction is solid hardwood- this piece is structurally perfect after 60 years of use! Plus the base is springs- springs are much more effective and durable compared to webbing- webbing sags and stretches over time- these springs are still doing exactly what they should be doing over 60 years on.

This is the advantage of investing in vintage design- you know how an item is going to hold up to use before shelling out a cent. Plus, vintage design can and does increase in value (providing you look after them). The Flerclub / Flerline has proven to increase in value along with inflation over the years (at least).

Modern furniture (and replicas in similar styles) may be cheap but what are you really getting? Something that’s doubtful to last like this piece has, a piece that exploits the people and earth to produce it and has no investment appeal (buy it and lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars instantly). Vintage furniture, like this 1960’s Flerclub / Flerline (FLER Club) sofa and in fact any furniture built to stand the test of time and carefully consider both function and durability is our only way out of this mess. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill. (I believe that throw-away furniture should have a “landfill tax” applied to it as we all pay the price for these items to be disposed of- if that was done (and made clear what the tax was for, I believe people would re-consider how they buy items for their home.)

This Flerclub / Flerline sofa is in excellent condition for its age. The timber frame is solid and sturdy with NO movement in any joint, NO wobbles, NO structural flaws and NO repairs. I’ve carefully inspected this piece all over (and have had 24-years experience doing this). After 60 years it is completely solid, strong, sturdy and free from repairs. This is the original vinyl from the 1960's. This covering is off-white which a stone look. I have moved the sofa into different lighting conditions to show how lighting influences the tone. The upholstery is free from wear and presents extremely well overall. One armrest has a small area where the vinyl has been pierced by something very small. This is not ordinarily noticed and pretty hard to spot. There is a photo that shows this area clearly (use the Magnifying tool to enlarge each image, then click on the enlarged image to Supersize it). The upholstery is clean and free from marks / stains. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The cushioning is all in excellent condition. The upholstery is light in colour and neutral- this allows the cool shape to take focus. Vinyl is perfect for sofas in light colour- this upholstery is as tough-as-nails, very hardy and easy to clean. This upholstery has a vintage look but is still fresh and modern in style. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
