This ORIGINAL / GENUINE Hans Wegner Wishbone chair sold through iNVISeDGE for $695 back in 2007. Today in 2019 I’d price the exact same chair at around $800. Values for this design have not gone ahead like similar designs because of replicas. Back in 2007 replicas of the Wishbone chair hadn’t yet been released. Still, labelled originals will always be sought-after by design purists who understand that the originals will retain their value over time (at least) or increase in value along with inflation. Replicas on the other hand lose value considerably the second you buy them- once they become second-hand they’re worth less than HALF of what you paid for them. (I’ve sometimes seen replica furniture being sold on ebay for quarter the retail price.) The reason for this is simple- you don’t know the construction quality you’re getting with replicas. The replica industry is built on ripping off other people’s intellectual property so we all know it’s about making as much money as the “fat-cats” can at any environmental and social impact and yes the replica industry has basically killed the industry. There is little incentive for designers to design anymore so few do it anymore.
Provenance and Background Info
(I couldn’t find the description I wrote for this piece back in 2007 so here’s a quick description written in 2019.)
The Wishbone chair or CH24 was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 (exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn) and has been in continuous production since its introduction in 1950. With a form that’s uniquely its own, the iconic CH24 Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner holds a special place in the world of modern design. More than 100 steps are required to manufacture each Wishbone Chair, most of which are carried out by hand. The hand-woven seats take an extraordinary level of skill and patience to produce and the result is not only beautiful but strong and durable. The Wishbone Chair sits at the pinnacle of Danish Modern Design, capturing the true essence of what the Danish design aesthetic is, in a way that no other design hasn’t quite done again.
