My vendor is consolidating his storage space. Crazy price! Once he sells something and frees up space, the price will go back up- don’t miss it at this price!
Being sold under consignment from Cranbourne, MELBOURNE. But can be sent Australia wide for a reasonable additional fee- about $300 to Sydney.
I personally travelled to this location to inspect this piece and take these photos to give you complete peace of mind with your investment. There have been items I’ve travelled to work with where I’ve turned around and gone straight back home! This item gets the iNVISeDGE tick of approval.
Background Info and Provenance

A GE-236 lounge sofa designed by Hans J Wegner for Getama, Gedsted Denmark. Designed back in 1955, this is a true design icon from the mid-century modern era. Wegner designs quickly reached legendary status- this is one of his best. I think what does it here is the stylish look from every angle. It’s not often I’ll choose a Gallery Photo showing the back of a sofa- so inspiring from the back with those curves and exposed oak. But just as special front on- minimalist, refined- this piece will offer your space a simplicity with a touch of magic. One of Hans Wegner’s design philosophies was that furniture should not be something hidden in a corner or up against a wall. This design sparked a spate of copycats but Wegner got it spot on- there was never any need to compete with it- Wegner’s design was (and still is) the best. As a result it sits at the pinnacle as far as investments go.
I love the oak construction. Most sofas from this era are teak which adds boldness to the look- the light tone of the oak gives it a fresh, airy aesthetic. It’d be very easy to place in any interior- even a modern space. Imagine this on marble floors!
Looks aside, it’s the comfort and durability that cements an outstanding design. Despite about 70 years of use, the structure is still flawless. The skill and precision given during production is one of the reasons these have such strong investment appeal. I’ve never seen anything go wrong with a Getama sofa. They’re all solid and sturdy 70 years on.
To top off this opportunity, this sofa has been professionally restored and presents incredibly well, AND the original sprung cushions from the 1950’s are all still present. These vintage sprung cushions have been designed to give you enduring comfort and hold you at the perfect angles for relaxing in over hours. On top of this, it’s also long enough to lie out on. This is one of the best Wegner sofas I’ve encountered. An obvious investment, the GE-286 design made by Getama have been popular since they were first released about 70 years ago. Timeless, elegant and still certainly noticed, this piece will elevate any space and won’t lose any value. The replicas become basically worthless as soon as they’re second-hand. They cut corners with the replicas- they won’t last. The originals give you complete peace of mind and a no-brainer investment.
Buying vintage furniture that has already stood the test of time is the best way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
