A great set of 4 Zanotta “Dora” designer outdoor chairs. These were made in Italy about 10 years ago. They were in full weather for at least 4 years and just look at them! They are SOLID and HEAVY. I’ve studied these in the flesh- it’s very obvious they have been built to last (and already have)! Outdoor furniture these days is hit or miss- virtually ALL is a miss! Nearly all is made with the bottom-line in question- how much money can we make from this? It’s not about you- the customer- at all. Outdoor items notoriously end up as landfill sooner rather than later (usually) except if they are made by a world-famous brand like Zanotta (or have been made in Italy). There was a T-shirt Madonna wore back in the 80’s- “Italians do it Better”. I think Madonna was implying sex. (!?) I’m not so sure about that, but the Italians certainly do furniture better!
Italian designer furniture looks better (these are just stunning- I love the leaf stencilling) and in virtually all cases Italian furniture has been built to last and will be passed from one generation to the next. I believe these Zanotta outdoor chairs will still be around in at least 40 years (I have no doubt about that if you freight them/transport them with some sense). This plastic is VERY SOLID (thick- no … we are not still talking about sex …) … they’re very heavy- I can’t see this plastic ever splitting, cracking, breaking or anything that will deem them ready for landfill in the not too distant future.
The other thing these chairs have going for them is investment appeal. To my knowledge they are no longer being sold new. I researched this design about 5 years ago (when I came across another set of these chairs to buy second-hand)- if memory serves me correctly new Zanotta Dora chairs with the leaf stencilling were selling for about $1000 EACH- they certainly weren’t cheap- I remember that much. To make them properly, they can’t be. The plastic is way thicker than the world-famous Casala chairs from the 1970’s (which incidentally are still going strong after about 50 years now).
Zanotta was established in 1954. Today (some 70 years later) Zanotta is one of the recognized leaders in Italian industrial design. Guided by Aurelio Zanotta, Zanotta has won and held the international spotlight, thanks to products of ground-breaking design and unsurpassed quality. What I find most fascinating about Zanotta is the “Works of Art” furniture they’re now doing. Very cool, ground-breaking designs (that are pushing boundaries and exploring new ideas). Zanotta “Works of Art” pieces are much like Couture in fashion. I’m surprised someone hadn’t done this sooner. Yes- in furniture the Italians certainly do it better!
Most modern-day “designer” outdoor furniture just copies what has been done before and most is made to end up as landfill (sooner, rather than later). These Zanotta chairs have been used for 10 years (4 years at least in full weather); the quality is just screaming from them- anyone with half a brain who experiences these chairs in the flesh will know very quickly they’re both DURABLE and BEAUTIFUL. When you invest in second-hand brands such as Zanotta I can’t think of any better way to invest in your home. I can’t see these chairs losing any value in the future- that’s a rare thing for OUTDOOR furniture! Plus you’re helping to reduce landfill too. It’s a win for you and our environment.
