Description

Price is for the matching PAIR of chairs only. The 3-seater day/night sofa is an additional $1,995. Priority will be given to those buyers who want to keep this suite together.

LOCATION- Shorncliffe, BRISBANE but this furniture can be transported Australia-wide for a reasonable additional fee about $200 to get the pair of chairs to SYDNEY.

This FLER Narvik suite was re-upholstered in the 1990’s but has seen little use since then. The upholstery is a QUALITY textile weave with nice weight and texture to it- the tone marries in perfectly with the beauty of the timber too.

Background Info and Provenance

This description was updated in 2025

A matching vintage PAIR of Narvik chairs produced by FLER in the early-1960’s (designed by Fred Lowen & Ernest Rodeck). This is one of Australia’s best adaptions of a Danish design ever. This design has a beautiful sculptural elegance often seen in Danish furniture but is still different to all the Danish chairs I’ve come across. The best Parker designs from the 1960’s are stylish and beautiful- I think the Narvik design by FLER is at least as good. Pairs of these are getting REALLY hard to get now and have skyrocketed in value particularly in the last 5 or 6 years (particularly this design. These have lower backs compared to some and they are two loose cushions sitting on a frame. The later FLER Narvik versions have a more complicated sewing job.) And because this design sits at the pinnacle of vintage offerings, they will ALWAYS do well from an investment point of view. I can’t see vintage FLER Narvik pieces losing any value in the future and should only continue appreciating in value at the same rate they have in the past. (There’s just not enough of them around anymore for values to actually decrease.)

The quality is at the top. This suite was purchased new by our vendors in 1959- ONLY ONE OWNER look at these after over 65 years of use- incredible! This upholstery is second generation and in excellent condition- it’s in a nice, neutral tone and would be easy to work into any home. But if you ever need a change, re-upholstery is the easiest possible upholstery job. Simply take the loose existing cushions with new fabric to anyone who knows how to sew. This variety, that has loose cushions sitting on frames, are extremely practical all round. Apart from how easy the upholstery job is, the covers can be easily removed when they need to be washed (always replace the covers whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage.)

And I almost forgot. The comfort of FLER Narvik chairs is excellent. The angles are spot-on for comfort (the back AND seat section are both slanted back slightly to give your back full relaxation- plus the back is curved too). There’s also softness to the comfort because the cushions have a nice plushness to them.

Investing in vintage items such as FLER Narvik lounges is a great way to go. When lounge chairs look like this after 65 years of use, you’re guaranteed of the quality and durability you’re buying. There are very few better ways to invest in your home. By valuing and recycling vintage design you’re helping to reduce landfill and protect our environment for future generations.

This pair of FLER Narvik armchairs is vintage (c. 1960). BOTH chairs are in excellent condition for the age. The timber is in excellent condition overall with very minor signs of age and use. Both chairs are strong, sturdy and very well built. There are NO repairs, NO breaks, NO splits and NO cracks in the timber. NO structural concerns at all. The frames would benefit from a light sand and oil. This is an easy job and would be extremely satisfying- there is a build up of grime over the years. It would be easy to remove this and it would really bring out the beautiful patterning in the timber (it's either teak or blackwood). The upholstery is in good condition with NO holes, NO wear but has discolouration as shown in the photos. This is a light coloured fabric so I'd say it will clean up with a good soaking in Napisan. Return the covers to the cushions whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage. The fabric looks pretty good as it is- certainly not abused- just loved. There are NO odours from pets or smokers, NO holes in the fabric and NO damage but they have discolouration (as is clearly shown). I think that washing the covers would get them very close to new again but they present well as they are. I've reduced the price by $400 on the last pair we sold about 18 months ago to give you the best possible deal we can. That is more than enough to pay for new re-upholstery if you need perfection but I reckon a wash will do the trick anyway. I really like the existing upholstery. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The webbing is in excellent condition and holds you in excellent seating position. The cushioning is also in excellent condition. These are the original cushions from 1959 so they're very heavy, dense and supportive. When you open the zipper you can see that the cushioning is vintage but this is of no consequence- it's how the cushioning works and the quality of what you're getting that matters. What it looks like after you open the zipper is of no consequence. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Pair Fler Narvik- loose cushions.
