Description

OFFERS OVER- $1,295 for the cognac leather Loge chair only (by Montis, Holland).  The earlier someone expresses interest, the cheaper my items sell for. Once items have been online for 4 – 5 months, more and more people have seen the listing, more people have researched what’s on offer and made enquiries, so I get more and more data to substantiate that my item is well undervalued. We have sold many items for DOUBLE the OFFERS OVER price especially when the listing has been online 4 – 5 months.

There is also a photo of a B & B Italia Kalos chair included, because this design is referenced in the description below. (The grey Kalos chair is no longer available.)

LOCATION- Geelong, South of MELBOURNE. This chair can be transported Australia wide. It would cost about $180 to get this chair to Sydney.

Provenance and Background Info

(Written in 2026- some information will be time sensitive.)

A Loge chair by Gerard Van Den Berg for Montis, Holland. This design was created in the late-1980’s. This Montis chair was so popular that B & B Italia released a design in 1997 that’s almost identical, which has remained a staple in the B & B Italia catalogue for almost 30 years now. The Loge chair came first- B & B Italia copied it. 2026 RRP of B & B Italia Kalos chairs start from AUD $6,470 at Space Furniture, Australia for chairs in fabric. Leather upholstered Kalos chairs by B & B Italia sell for significantly more than this. With all these curves and sweeping arcs, this type of design is way harder to do in leather and requires the very best upholstery-artisans to upholster them. Leather is much less pliable compared to fabric, much harder to work with and the leather itself is more costly to buy in the first place. The majority of fabrics these days are just chemical concoctions. Being a natural product, leather is more expensive to process, plus the leather on this Loge chair is more expensive again as it’s semi-aniline leather. Aniline leather is not painted so the production process is a lot more time-consuming.

The leather on this vintage Loge chair is beautiful to touch, soft and inviting. The colour also is brilliant. This chair has such a warm, earthy vibe. The design itself has a modern, space-age style- the leather has a rustic and earthy look. These contrasts provide an intriguing look. The mid-tone in this warm colour gives this relaxing chair plenty of scope to be used in a wide variety of interiors. Picture this in a room with a fireplace up in the mountains. This chair would be noticed but would still blend in nicely with the vibe of an earthy or rustic room. I can picture this in a sophisticated cigar room too (not that they really exist these days!) or even a library.

This particular chair is about 35 years old- just look at it! No guessing the quality of the construction and leather. It presents beautifully for a vintage chair of this era. The quality of this leather will ensure the longevity of this investment too (the leather is thick and supple). This chair could never be produced for anywhere the price given above. The cost of the labour for a master artisan to upholster this chair would be about this alone- that’s without the cost of this quality leather and without building the chair in the first place! A no-brainer investment, and if looked after with any sense, I believe it can only increase in value in the future whilst you get to enjoy it in your home. The retail value of a B & B Italia original in leather today (which are a copy of this design) is around AU $8,000- this is a no-brainer investment that has already stood the test of time and will continue to do so. No need to pay anything near this price and no need to wait the usual lead time either (8-weeks or more) to get a new chair from Italy.

The quality and durability of this chair is arguably even better than the B & B Italia derivative too. The bottom section is metal for increased durability.

I have to add before I finish, that this design is one of the most visually pleasing you’ll see. It’s restrained but certainly noticed. The curves, that look like a child’s slippery-slide, are soothing and calming. These chairs have stature like a gentleman’s chair but with peaceful, flowing lines. It’s an intriguing contrast. The comfort is also great. Great angles and support. A great sitting chair- perfect for watching TV, reading or socializing. They are certainly not the type of chair you keep on sinking in and pray to God you’ll be able to fight your way out when it comes time stand up!

Why buy mass-produced furniture with highly questionable construction qualities? Vintage Loge chairs by Dutch heavyweight, Montis have stood the test of time with regards to both workmanship, timeless design and solid investment appeal. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and to reduce landfill.

This Loge chair is in brilliant condition for a chair of this age (about 35 years old). It has no condition issues that warrant a mention. NO damage- it has been used in a household without children or pets. It's obvious the chair has been used too- not just put on display. The aniline leather has minor wear but nothing unsightly though. I actually quite like this- it shows that this chair has been used and loved- it has authentic vintage character. The leather has been worn in- it's certainly nowhere near being worn out. I think this one will last another 35 years and then another 35. This piece is ready for the new owner and if looked after with any sense, it will be passed on to future generations. The chair is structurally strong and sturdy. Two of the feet come off when you pick the chair. Insitu the chair will never be picked up so the feet stay on when in use. This would probably be easy to rectify- I didn't have the time last time to look into it when I was in Geelong. It doesn't effect the chair as well. It's only when you move it that you have to be careful. If being picked up by a carrier the buyer has some responsibility to ensure that the chosen carrier is told that two legs will come off when the chair is moved and that they must be diligent to ensure the legs are taken with the chair. Summing up, the structure and leather is in great condition. Straight after applying leather conditioner on the chair, the leather in high-use areas goes a little darker but over a week or so the leather tone evens out again as the conditioner penetrates deeper into the upholstery. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Loge chair Measurements.
