Description

The full suite SOLD in the first week it was listed.

The price shown is for the 3-SEATER SOFA ($995 if you buy the full 4-piece lounge suite). There’s a matching PAIR of swivel chairs and table, priced SEPARATELY. Priority will be given to those buyers who’d like to purchase this full 4-piece suite. This is an AUTHENTIC VINTAGE SUITE FROM THE 1970’s in original wool. VINTAGE top-quality upholstery (from the late-1970’s)- the wool upholstery is thick, soft and pure-luxury. T21 sofas with the sled base are also harder to get compared to the design with 4 legs and look much nicer.

Retail Price of a full suite like this NEW from Tessa in 2019 in 100% wool- approx. AU $13,000. (Tessa is now out-of-business.) This suite is priced to SELL! We sold a similar suite (same configuration 3,1,1 in the original fabric- gold colour) last year for $4,100- I personally prefer this upholstery compared to the upholstery on that suite. (I have bank statements to prove that result too.)

LOCATION- Lidcombe, SYDNEY. Freight for just the 3-seater to Melbourne would be ABOUT $280- this will give you a general idea of freight costs to your location.

Background Info and Provenance

This is arguably one of the most sought-after lounge suites to ever come out of Australia. (Listed price is for 3-seater sofa. There is also a PAIR of swivel chairs and table- priced SEPARATELY.) The Contour range by Grant Featherston is probably the most collectable in terms of dollar-value, but this design, the T21 swivel lounge chair, released by Tessa in the early 1970’s is, in my experience, the most asked-for chair. And I understand why so many people want them. The quality just jumps out at you but it’s the comfort that everyone wants. OMG … after sitting in a Tessa T21 chair you’ll instantly understand why so many people say they are the most comfortable chair ever made! We have sold vintage Tessa T21 lounge suites in leather for upwards of $8,000 and can show bank statements to prove this.

This Tessa T21 lounge suite was made in 1970’s- it has had no contact with pets or cigarette smoke. This ORIGINAL vintage wool from the 1970’s is sensational in QUALITY. There’s absolutely no comparison between these vintage wools and modern woollen upholstery. This upholstery is THICK and as tough-as-nails. As a result, this Tessa suite is close to being the same as it was when it left the Tessa factory nearly 50 years ago. This verifies the esteem and quality of what’s on offer. It’s very hard to find Tessa T21 suites in soft coverings (in excellent condition). Nearly all Tessa T21 suites are leather. I have had various people over the years ask for this furniture upholstered in anything but leather. The other thing this suite has going for it is the light, neutral tone. Due to the colour of the upholstery, this suite has a classy, refined look. This upholstery pares back the bold look of the T21 design.

After a 50-year stint in the Australian Marketplace, making their furniture in AUSTRALIA, Tessa Furniture closed its doors in 2019. It’s a sorry state of affairs when an Australian business can no longer do what they do so well because of cheap imports destined to end up as landfill. And this is the very reason why Tessa eventually died. Their designs are so well-made that the second-hand market for Tessa pieces ended up becoming more sought-after than new Tessa Furniture. And who can blame people going straight to the second-hand market for designs such as these? The QUALITY of these chairs is so exceptional that second-hand Tessa chairs often still look basically new after 10, 20, 30, 40 even 50 years of use. In this listing you’re getting a suite that looks close to new but for about one quarter the price of a new one.

These days, I believe Tessa T21 lounge suites are THE best investment in the Australian furniture marketplace. Everyone seems to want T21’s at the moment and because they are NO LONGER in production, more and more people will hang onto their suites for a lifetime of enjoyment- therefore less and less will be coming onto the secondary market. Tessa T21 3-seater sofas retailed NEW in wool for about $5,500 just before Tessa went under- at our price (at about ONE QUARTER retail) it should be obvious to anybody that the only way the value of this furniture can go, is up.

This upholstery really suits the T21- the lighter neutral tone pares back the boldness of the design and allows the timber armrests to take focus.

This Tessa T21 lounge suite is about 50 years old. After much of the world’s furniture ends up as landfill, this suite will be passed onto another user and eventually a whole new generation. Now that Tessa Furniture is no longer made anymore, I can’t see any reason why this design (made in AUSTRALIA) won’t slowly increase to the value they were selling for new (ie. $7,000 for the matching pair of chairs in wool). There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, the future of our environment and local community.

Both chairs and the sled-based lounge are in excellent original condition- there's nothing at all that draws your eye. Both chairs (and the sofa) are heavy and very solidly built- the T21 design is particularly strong and durable. I've never seen anything structurally wrong with T21 Tessa furniture- these pieces are no exception. The swivel mechanism on both chairs works perfectly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is the original wool from the 70's. This wool is THICK, soft and sensational in quality. As is clearly shown in our photos the upholstery on the full suite has no real signs of use. NO holes, NO damage, NO stains, NO odours, NO noticeable wear. The wool is 50 years old and never been cleaned (but also was not used a lot- it was NOT in the TV room but in the "good room" instead- used for guests and reading only.) The upholstery has no stains but is discoloured from normal use. Employ the Magnifying Tool. Click on the Magnifying glass, then click on each image again to Supersize it. The minor discolouration is clearly shown in my array of photos. And depicted in two different types of light as well. There are some photos of this suite in strong natural light as well as photos in strong indoor light. Use the Magnifying tool on every photo so you know exactly what you'll be getting. I'd say the upholstery will clean up really well. There's no stains, just minor discolouration from use. A professional steam-cleaner should be able to get this upholstery close to new. I couldn't clean this suite unfortunately because it went straight into my Sydney storage. I don't have access to electricity there. If it went into Brisbane or Melbourne I would have removed the covers, soaked them in Napisan, then washed the covers using the gentle cycle of the washing machine (in Woolmix). The labels state, dry-cleaning only. I wouldn't have followed the label though. I've soaked (overnight) and washed wool upholstery in the past with great results. HOWEVER YOU MUST RETURN THE COVERS TO THE CUSHIONS WHILST STILL DAMP (I SPIN COVERS IN THE WASHING MACHINE- GENTLE CYCLE- THAT DOES NOTHING TO THE COVERS). If you replace the covers to the cushions whilst still damp, the covers will hold their shape and NOT shrink. Or if you don't want to be adventurous, follow the label on the lounges and get the suite dry-cleaned. A professional cleaner should know exactly what cleaner to use for best results. Shop around for a highly-experienced cleaner. I forgot to photograph the labels unfortunately. If memory serves me correctly the labels state that it's 100% New Wool and says, Dry Clean Only. It definitely is the original covering. I sold a suite last year for $4,100 in the original fabric from the late-1970's. I have reduced the price of this by $1,100- plenty of $ leftover for cleaning and to facilitate a quick sale. Don't miss this rare suite! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The cushioning is all in excellent condition, the cushions are all holding their shape brilliantly! Tessa use top-quality cushioning and fabric that lasts several generations. The chairs and lounge are incredibly supportive with just the right amount of plushness. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
